1. Every year in the UK around 2 million tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is thrown away from homes and businesses. Its one of the fastest growing waste streams, with most ending up in landfill and contributing to a huge waste of resources and pollution from hazardous chemicals, threatening the environment and human health. The UK, along with other countries, has implemented the European WEEE Directive to tackle this problem by minimising the quantity sent to landfill and getting WEEE collected separately for reuse, recycling or environmentally sound disposal.
2. Everyone is encouraged to play a part. Electrical appliances are being marked with a crossed out wheelie bin symbol, to remind users they should be separated and collected for reuse, recycling or environmentally sound disposal at the end of their life, and not put into the dustbin with general household rubbish.
   
   This store is taking-back waste electrical and electronic equipment completely free-of-charge from members of the public when buying new equipment on a like-for-like basis.
   
   
3. This store is providing information to customers on the importance of separating WEEE and the benefits of reuse, recycling or environmentally sound disposal. This store is also providing for customers, in-store take-back of their old electrical appliances and fluorescent tubes, completely free-of charge when buying new like-for-like replacement electrical appliances and fluorescent tubes, either in the store or on-line from www.coopersdirect.com
4. Customers wanting to bring back WEEE having already purchased replacement electrical appliances or fluorescent tubes to any Coopers store may do so. We will take-it-back free of charge within 28 days with proof of a like-for-like purchase.
5. We take-back WEEE free of charge from customers buying new like-for-like electrical appliances and fluorescent tubes either through our stores or our delivery service. These electrical appliances include the normal kettles, toasters, irons etc but also retail electrical power tools and lawnmowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers etc. They also include outdoor electrical lights, Christmas lights, electrical heaters and tools. 6. This store provides in-store take-back services to household customers. It does not have to take-back from professional tradesmen (electricians, builders, businesses, etc), or electrical equipment that is outside the scope of the directive from anyone. Including filament light bulbs and household lamps, batteries, electrical fittings (plugs, sockets, cable, fuses, etc). We will use our discretion in these cases, and we may accept them. Alternatively customers may wish to take any WEEE they might have to one of the designated collection facilities at their nearest local civic amenity site operated by the Council.
7. This store will ensure all the WEEE that has been taken-back from customers is sent to an authorised treatment facility approved by the Environment Agency.
